PlantTherapy: Rock. Center Tree Turned to Lumber

Jan 12, 2008

The lumber created will be used to build houses for Habitat for Humanity (via NY Daily News)

This past week the tree came down and was prepared for the saw. It was the final chapter in the Rockefeller Center's plan for going 'green' on the event's 75th anniversary...

The live tree was chopped down by hand (no chainsaw) and replaced with a new one, the lights were LED and powered by solar panels, the branches were mulched, and the trunk cut into lumber to build houses. The process is also documented in a website made just for the occasion.

It is a nice gesture to raise awareness. They call it 'Celebrating Sensibly'. Sounds like they got the tree a designated driver. We all love the tree - but it is a big event that uses up a lot of fuel and energy (They search for the tree by HELICOPTER, it's hauled in on a flatbed truck, and a crane lifts into place - hello!). It is great to see how they are offsetting the energy used to make it all happen and at least putting the tree to work after it's been used.
